Julie Qilabasa Alakal Leads with Resilience and Determination by: Meiva Vuniwai
When I first met Julie Qilabasa Alakalia during our public health studies at Fiji National University, she was quiet and reserved, always thoughtful but hesitant to speak up. Today, she’s a Health Information System (HIS) professional with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Solomon Islands Ministry of Health, and her impact is reaching far beyond the Pacific.
This year, Julie represented the Solomon Islands as one of two delegates at the U.S.-Pacific Rising Leaders Fellowship in Washington, D.C. The program, launched by the White House in 2022, empowers professionals from Pacific Island nations. For Julie, it was her first trip to the U.S. and a chance to step out of her comfort zone.
Getting there wasn’t easy. Julie applied several times before finally being selected, each rejection pushing her to refine her approach. “Every setback was a chance to improve,” she said. Once there, she faced new challenges, including speaking at the U.S. State Department’s Health Department. Nervous but determined, Julie shared her experiences managing COVID-19 in the Pacific, a moment she describes as transformative for her confidence and leadership. During our Coming to the Mat podcast interview, I asked her what leadership means to her, and this is what she had to say:
“Leadership isn’t about knowing everything,” Julie said. “It’s about listening, collaborating, and learning from others.”
Julie is also passionate about encouraging women in the Solomon Islands to step into leadership roles. She believes in the power of mentorship and networking to build confidence. Her advice to others is simple: “Take risks, make mistakes, and don’t give up. Growth comes through challenges.”
Inspiring Others
Julie’s story is a powerful reminder of what persistence and courage can achieve. From a quiet student to a global leader, she inspires young Melanesians—especially women—to believe in their potential and work toward their goals. Her journey shows that stepping outside your comfort zone can lead to incredible opportunities.
